Sherwani Tailoring in Kolkata at Mukhtar Tailor, Park Street, Kolkata

Sherwani tailoring asks for a different eye than a suit. The line is longer, the collar has to stand without strangling, and the garment is usually worn for twelve hours in a warm room while being photographed constantly.

What we make

Wedding sherwani with churidar or trousers. Bandhgala and Nehru-collar jackets, which work as well over trousers at a reception as over churidar at a nikah. Kurta sets, plain or worked. Jodhpuri suits. If you are unsure which of these your event actually calls for, ask — we will say what we would put a client in.

The collar and the length

Two things decide whether a sherwani looks right. The collar must stand cleanly without gaping at the throat or digging in when you turn. And the length must be judged against your height and the churidar underneath, not copied from a photograph of a taller man. Both are settled at the fitting, on you.

Heavy work and embroidery

If your sherwani carries zardozi, thread work or heavy borders, the cloth behaves differently and needs allowing for in the cut. Bring the worked fabric to the measuring visit so we can see its weight and drape before drafting, rather than discovering it at the fitting.

Book early for wedding season

Between November and February, and again around Eid, every good tailor in Kolkata is full. A sherwani wants three weeks. If your date is inside that window, call now and hold a slot rather than finding out in October that nobody can take you.

From your call to the finished garment

Measure and discuss

At your home. Length, collar height, churidar or trousers, and what the rest of the wedding party is wearing.

Cut to your cloth

Drafted around the weight and the worked areas of your fabric, not around a standard length.

Fit

On you, unfinished. Collar stand and hem length are judged here — a photograph cannot tell us these.

Delivered before the date

Finished, pressed, delivered to you with time in hand, not on the morning of the function.

Sherwani & Indian Wear across Kolkata

The workshop is on Park Street, but very little of our work happens there. We measure, fit and deliver at the client's own home or office — Camac Street, Elgin, Chowringhee, Esplanade, Park Circus, Ballygunge, Bhowanipore, Alipore, Gariahat, Taltala, Sealdah, Topsia, Kasba, Salt Lake, Newtown, Rajarhat and Howrah. Salt Lake, Newtown and Rajarhat are regular runs for us, and there is no travel charge and no minimum order for a visit.

How the home visit works

Sherwani & Indian Wear in Kolkata — your questions

Three weeks is comfortable and lets us fit you properly. In peak wedding season, book a month out — not because the stitching takes longer, but because the calendar fills.

Yes, and most clients do, especially where the fabric is embroidered or came from a family shop. Bring it to the measuring visit so we can see how it drapes before cutting.

Churidar is traditional and reads more formal; straight trousers are easier to sit and eat in through a long function. We will show you how each changes the line on you at the fitting.

Yes — brothers, fathers and groomsmen are regular work, and it is easier when we measure everyone in one visit. Tell us the numbers when you book so we can allow the time.

Yes. A well-cut bandhgala is one of the most useful jackets a man in Kolkata can own — formal enough for a wedding, comfortable enough for the weather.
