Kolkata is warm and humid for most of the year, and formal menswear was largely designed somewhere that is not. The result is a great deal of avoidable misery at weddings. Almost all of it is a fabric problem, not a tailoring one.
Weight matters more than fibre
Men ask whether wool or linen is cooler. The more useful question is the weight and the weave. A lightweight open-weave wool will be more comfortable through a long evening than a dense cotton, because air moves through it. Weight is usually stated in grams per metre — under about 250 is a summer cloth in this climate, and over 300 belongs to December.
Linen, honestly
Linen is genuinely cool and it genuinely creases, and no tailor can give you one without the other. Worn with that expectation it is superb for daytime functions. If creasing will bother you in photographs, a linen-wool blend keeps much of the comfort with less of the wrinkle.
What the lining does
This is the part nobody asks about and it makes as much difference as the outer cloth. A fully lined jacket in July is a warm jacket whatever it is made of. Half-lined or unlined construction changes the experience of wearing it completely, and it costs nothing extra to specify at the start.
Colour and the camera
Light colours are cooler in sunlight and photograph well outdoors. Very dark suits under warm indoor lighting read heavier than they look on the hanger. For a daytime wedding, mid-grey or a soft blue is easier to wear and easier to photograph than black.
The Kolkata compromise
For a warm-weather function, a well-cut two-piece in a light open weave, half-lined, beats a three-piece every time — a waistcoat worn open because you are too warm is worse than no waistcoat. And for many occasions a bandhgala genuinely is the more comfortable formal answer.
