Most men arrive at a tailor with a fabric and a vague idea. The conversation before the tape comes out matters more than either. Here is what is actually useful.
Bring a garment that already fits
This is the single most useful thing you can do, and almost nobody does it. A shirt or a jacket you already like tells a tailor more in one minute than twenty minutes of measuring, because it shows him what you find comfortable — which is not a number on a tape. If you own it, bring it.
Say what it is for
A jacket for a July reception and a jacket for an air-conditioned office are different garments even in the same cloth. Tell your tailor the event, the month and the room. In Kolkata, the month is not a small detail — a heavy worsted that photographs beautifully will be unwearable by the third hour.
Say how you will wear it
Buttoned or open. With a waistcoat or without. Will you be sitting for a long dinner, or standing and moving? A jacket cut close enough to look sharp standing can be genuinely uncomfortable through a three-hour meal, and a tailor can allow for that — if he knows.
Be honest about your weight
If you are deliberately losing or gaining, say so. There is a real difference between cutting for the body in front of the tailor and cutting for the body you expect in two months, and it is far easier to plan for than to fix afterwards.
Mention what has annoyed you before
Collars that gape. Sleeves always too long. Trousers that bag at the seat. These are not complaints, they are the most useful information you can give — each one points at a specific adjustment, and most of them are things ready-made clothing gets wrong for the same reason every time.
Ask what it will cost before cutting starts
Any tailor worth using will tell you. Cloth is usually the larger half of the bill, so the honest question is what your total budget is including fabric — then the answer can be shaped around it rather than discovered at the end.
You do not have to go anywhere
All of the above works just as well in your own front room. We come to clients across Kolkata to measure and to fit, at no extra charge — and having your own wardrobe to hand while you talk about fit turns out to be genuinely useful. Call or WhatsApp +91 74397 82329.
